Jamaica in brief
Jamaica is the most populous English-speaking island in the Caribbean, with an economy built on tourism (Montego Bay and Negril are the main resort destinations), the bauxite industry, and diaspora remittances. A work permit for foreigners is required under the Foreign Nationals and Commonwealth Citizens (Employment) Act and is issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security; CARICOM nationals holding a CARICOM Skills Certificate work without a permit under the CSME free movement of skilled persons regime. Permanent residence through employment is available after more than 3 years of work in the country; naturalisation requires 5 years of cumulative residence, and citizenship by marriage to a Jamaican citizen can be applied for immediately after the marriage is registered. Dual citizenship is permitted without restriction to a list of countries. Importing dogs and cats is mandatory through the sole legal port of entry (Kingston), with 14-day quarantine and a mandatory rabies antibody test (FAVN) regardless of country of origin — no exemption for 'rabies-free countries' was found. The homicide rate is one of the highest in the world, 40.36 per 100,000 population (UNODC, 2024). The territory lies within the tropical cyclone season zone (June–November, INFORM risk 8.2 out of 10) — in 2026, Hurricane Melissa affected seven parishes and over a third of the country's population — and in a seismically active part of the Caribbean (INFORM earthquake risk 7.9 out of 10).
Trinidad and Tobago in brief
Trinidad and Tobago is a two-island state with a split economy: Trinidad is the industrial and business centre, built on oil and gas extraction and processing, while Tobago is a tourist island with its own resort specialisation. Grounds for work include a work permit tied to a specific employer (Immigration Regulations, reg. 10), a ministerial-order exemption from the permit for certain categories, a student's permit, and resident status. Separately, the CARICOM regime applies (Immigration (Caribbean Community Skilled Nationals) Act, Ch. 18:03): citizens of member states with a CARICOM Skills Qualification recognition certificate enter for an indefinite period and work without a work permit on an equal footing with the country's own citizens — this sets Trinidad and Tobago apart from Caribbean states outside the bloc. Resident status is available after 5 years of continuous residence (or sooner at the minister's discretion); naturalisation for other foreigners requires at least 12 months immediately before applying and a total of 5 years of residence within the preceding 7 years; dual citizenship is generally allowed for citizens by birth and by descent. Importing dogs and cats has not required quarantine since 2013, but is regulated by the category of the country of origin: countries with low rabies risk need only an import permit, while most others require antibody titration and up to five months of preparation. The level of violent crime is one of the highest in the Caribbean region (41.52 murders per 100,000 people, UNODC, 2024). The economy is structurally dependent on oil, gas and petrochemicals: according to the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, these sectors provide the largest contribution to the country's GDP. The country lies at low latitudes, south of the main zone where Atlantic hurricanes form (INFORM: cyclone risk 5.7 out of 10 — lower than for most Caribbean neighbours), which reduces the frequency of direct tropical storm hits compared with the rest of the region.
