Fiji in brief

Fiji is an archipelago in the South Pacific; its economy rests on tourism (the main entry flow is through Nadi International Airport, with transit to the resort islands of the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups, which have no separate cities), the sugar industry, and a growing outsourcing sector (BPO/KPO). The immigration system (Immigration Act 2003, Immigration Regulations 2007) is built on renewable permits — work permits (Short/Long Term Work Permit), an investor permit (Investor Permit), and a rentier-retiree permit (Residence Permit on Assured Income) — with no separate permanent-residence category: time held on these permits counts directly towards the naturalisation threshold (5 of the last 10 years). Dual citizenship has been permitted since 2009. A separate digital nomad visa, announced in 2022, does not appear in the Ministry of Immigration's list of active categories as of this research (August 2026). The country is officially rabies-free and maintains strict quarantine controls on importing dogs and cats — the only pets for which an import procedure exists. The climate risk reflected in the INFORM index is the tropical cyclone season from November to April. A significant share of the territory (87%) is iTaukei communal land, which cannot be bought into ownership by either a citizen or a foreigner — it can only be leased for up to 99 years through the iTaukei Land Trust Board; only the remaining portion of land (freehold and state land) is in free circulation.
